Stakes are high as Peruvians go to the polls to elect their next President on June 6th. The country has been devastated by the mismanagement of the COVID-19 crisis, which has led to tens of thousands of reported deaths, mass employment, and economic decline.
The two candidates in the second round of the Peruvian Presidential elections have radically different visions for leading the country out of this chaos. The far-right candidate Keiko Fujimori (daughter of the dictator Alberto Fujimori, who ruled the country with an iron fist in the 1990s) is trying to campaign on issues related to anti-corruption and anti-communism, as a smokescreen for the hardcore neoliberal, anti-worker economic proposals that she supports. At the same time, the left-wing candidate from the Peru Libre party, Pedro Castillo, proposes to raise taxes on the rich and increase the percentage of royalties paid by companies that are exploiting Peru’s vast natural mineral wealth, in order to better fund social programs, especially public health and education.
Will the political and economic elites in Peru (with the explicit support of the mass media) be able to scare the majority of voters into supporting Keiko, through unfoundedly accusing Castillo of being a “terrorist” and puppet of the Maduro regime in Venezuela? Or will Peruvian workers and peasants, especially from rural areas, come out in force to support Castillo’s pro-poor agenda? Elecciones en el Perú: ¿Giro a la izquierda o paso atrás hacia a la extrema derecha?

Hay mucho en juego cuando los peruanos acuden a las urnas para elegir a su próximo presidente el 6 de junio. El país ha sido devastado por la mala gestión de la crisis del COVID-19, que ha provocado decenas de miles de muertes, desempleo masivo y una caída drástica del PIB.
Los dos candidatos en la segunda vuelta de las elecciones presidenciales peruanas tienen visiones radicalmente diferentes para sacar al país de este caos. La candidata de extrema derecha Keiko Fujimori (hija del dictador Alberto Fujimori, que gobernó el país con mano firme en la década de 1990) está tratando de hacer campaña en base de temas relacionados con la lucha contra la corrupción y el anticomunismo, como una cortina de humo para las propuestas económicas neoliberales duras que apoya. Al mismo tiempo, el candidato de izquierda del partido Perú Libre, Pedro Castillo, propone aumentar los impuestos a los ricos y subir el porcentaje de las regalías que pagan las empresas que explotan la enorme riqueza mineral natural de Perú, para poder aumentar los recursos disponibles para los programas sociales, especialmente la salud y la educación publica.
¿Lograrán las élites políticas y económicas del Perú (con el apoyo explícito de los medios masivos de comunicación) asustar a la mayoría de los votantes para que apoyen a Keiko, mediante la acusación infundada de que Castillo es un "terrorista" y un títere del régimen de Maduro en Venezuela? ¿O los trabajadores y campesinos peruanos, saldrán en masa a apoyar la agenda pro-pobre de Castillo a pesar de los ataques mediáticos? En este webinario, organizado por el Comité Internacional del DSA, escucharemos a los líderes del partido Perú Libre, activistas sindicales y analistas de los medios de comunicación progresistas, que analizarán la situación política actual y aportarán a un debate sobre cómo los activistas en los EE.UU. pueden construir lazos de solidaridad mas fuertes con la izquierda peruana, en este momento electoral y mas allá.
