Yet the police pretend that they are society’s best defense against crime.” This quote by David Bayley is a fact that many communities of color have known for decades, and finally the nation is having a discussion on the function of police in our society.
Join us for a talk featuring Alex Vitale, professor of sociology at Brooklyn College and author of The End of Policing. We will center the discussion around origin, but specifically tailor the conversation to focus on class analysis and the direction of the defunding movement while exploring the lessons we’ve learned in the months of protests and demands following the murders of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd.
This mass call is a unique opportunity to hear about police defunding work that DSA chapters across the nation are doing, along with their specific demands and wins. There will also be an opportunity to share ideas and discuss critical questions about the police abolition movement and our role in it as socialists.
